– Just a few Cyclone Preparation Suggestion/hints for yachts
VESSELS on moorings:-
Consider
we have some predictions of 60/80 plus knots of sustained winds and
gusts to over 130 knots, so crews must undertake the following as a
bare minimum.
1]
Minimize chafe, both at tie point to mooring lines and at leads onto
your yacht and yacht tie point.
2]
Minimize windage where possible by removing as many awnings, sun
covers,tarps equipment on deck –
remove any headsail furlers, and tightly wrap mainsails to booms
3]
Secure your dink's and outboards.
4]
Provisioning ….ensure you have food, drinks, fuel ,flashlight
batteries on board you may not be able to get ashore for days.
5]
Anchor lighting-although you are on a mooring to display anchor
lights low is helpful-note masthead lights are difficult to see in
Cyclones.
6]
Maintain a radio watch
7]
Do not delay in actioning preparation Nor moving to you
mooring!!!!!!!!!
There
are many more preparation items you can undertake if you think of
them ACTION THEM NOW….OFTEN DURING A CYCLONE IT WILL BE TOO
LATE…
Good
Luck……………

Curly

To
those who felt the force of Cyclone Winston -
YOU
ARE IN OUR THOUGHTS AND PRAYERS.
Aftermath
of Cyclone Winston
Brief Curly Report;#1…..24 Feb 2016
Comms
back up last night...
I'm
OK I guess but finding it very difficult to get around left leg
injured , house boat damaged by 11 boats crashing into it as they
wizzing past, but she is floating and mooring held.
Winds
well in excess of 135 knot's BUT gusts hate to think how much over
135 !!!!!
Savusavu
is a disaster area, Nawi looks naked; 22 vessels up on rocks or
aground, some badly damaged Heart-Beat - sunk on shore, Quickzotic
cat - port hull holed she is on rocks – cruiser team working on
her, Amosea Island cat way up on rocks both hulls holed-badly
damaged, Pacifica parked against sea wall next to MH port hull
pierced by power pole badly damaged, Stella Rosa will probably sink.
High number of local power boats upside down or sunk. Damage to
housing and infrastructure major/major.....roading has been hit hard,
no road apparently to Cousteau., power out in many area's, probably
60 % of trees down.
I
called a meeting of all cruisers day after TC Winston went thru, very
well attended, we are getting organized to help ALL effected yachts,
Priorities set, darn it some grumbling as they want priority ho
hum....now we have comms we will be able to move quicker....lots of
shops not open staff working on homes etc. It
is awesome how most of the fleet are working together......
More
later on overload and not able to do my own repairs.
Brief
Curly Report ;# 2 dated 25 Feb 2016
Awesome
news some of the cruising fleet were able with the assistance of MV
Contraband to remove SV Guava Jelly from the rocks and being wedged
hard against SV QuikZotic, thus allowing salvage work by another team
of cruiser to continue on Quikzotic.
There
has been a meeting between marina's discussing recovery, also we are
obtaining permissions from owners to effect salvage which we hope can
be kept inexpensive due to the volunteers being fellow cruisers.
Assessments
made re most yachts aground yesterday even though they have been
driven way inland by the cyclone surge, gives hope that most can be
returned to their natural inhabitant of the ocean. It will be time
consuming and a huge amount of preparation, and PLUS some of the
"BOX" methods.
That's
it for now….please be assured I will be responding to your emails
but I am a 2 finger typist and am on overload, have patience.
Brief
Curly Report #3 dated 25 feb 2016
Moorings
are being dived, checked and or reinstated.
WE
have 3-4 volunteer teams working, and thank them so much for there
contribution.
The
vessel we are using for towing grounded yachts off, MV Contraband
will not be available from Sunday 28 Feb - 06 March 2016, as owner
will be in NZ.
Today
the MV Contraband, it's crew and cruiser volunteers will attempt to
move SV Passion into deep water from rocks and mangrove, we all wish
them the very best.
I
need to have owners email me, as we need email authority before we
will attempt any recovery….my .Email is curlycarswell@gmail.com .
Be assured we are all cruisers so understand financial constraints.
Our aim is to recover all yachts, it must be realized that 2-3 yachts
due to the damaged sustain will take creative methods but
nothing is impossible.
Hear
the recovery crew on the radio so will close for the day…please if
you know an owner of a grounded yacht get him to email me.
Regards,
Curly
Brief
Curly Report #4 Dated, 26 Feb 2016
It
is fantastic that I can report SV Passion was refloated and placed on
a mooring yesterday by the MV Contraband and our volunteer group of
cruisers, very well done team, as it was a difficult recovery. Of
more importance our volunteer cruiser group now comprises of cruisers
from all marina's "WAY TO GO SAILORS !!!!!!"
Our
primary concern remains to deal with those yachts at most risk , ie
yachts on the rocks or trapped in coral. The catagory 5 cyclone storm
surge drove yachts above the high tide line some by more than 2 feet,
this means some yachts are high and dry others have been driven
inland hundreds of meters. I am confident that all will be returned
to sail the ocean, but please please patience, is required!! Not to
mention working with tides, and giving volunteer teams time to work
on their own yacht problems.
The
positive attitude of most cruisers are alive and well, but being
fiercely independent, some cruisers want their yacht to jump the
line, because...J
The
best news is that out of the list of 22 groundings, 5 vessels have
been recovered and placed on moorings. SV Stella Rosa was pumped out
by a cruiser team – thanks. Most if not all local small boats have
all been taken ashore.
Today
the volunteer cruiser teams will be doing preparation with the hope
that another yacht will be recovered tomorrow.
To
all those sending emails, thanks for your kind thoughts, they are
highly appreciated, I really am so so sorry for not answering all
your emails but there is only so many seconds in a minute, so many
minutes in and hour. Is there only 30 hours in a day ^$^*&^$#
???J

Curly
Brief
Curly Recovery Report # 5, Dated 27 Feb 2016
Yesterday
the volunteer cruisers teams spent a day of preparation in terribly
deep muddy conditions removing large rocks that were in the way of 2
yachts recovery. Other teams were gaining authority's permission to
use excavators, a team was marking GPS's mooring positions, the MV
Contraband and her volunteer cruiser team was affixing a bridle, and
cutting tree branches to tow a yacht SV Coup de Soleil off rocks at
09h56 high tide today.
I
am attaching an email I received from our customs officer in charge
Nausad Ali Savusavu, who briefed the cruiser meeting I called, he has
produced the following email as confirmation, he is supportive,

Brief
Curly Recovery Report # 6. Dated 28 Feb 2016
It
is with the greatest pleasure I report that MV Contraband [a genuine
Power Cruiser] and our "A Team of Volunteer Cruisers", were
able to refloat SV Coup de Soleil, this yacht was up on the rocks and
now is back on a mooring.
Readers
of the blog , please realize that a massive amount of difficult and
dirty/muddy hard, back breaking work [Hand removal of very big rocks
/monkey acts in trees freeing rigging etc] is required with days of
preparation on each yacht. most if not all this preparation is being
done by other cruiser volunteers, it really is an incredible effort
to help each other and keep costs down, KEEP IT UP SAILORS - A HARD
ACT TO FOLLOW!!!!!!!
Resulting
effort ...out of the list of 22 vessels aground, local teams have
recovered 3 large powerboats and the cruiser volunteers have
refloated 3 Yachts [much larger vessels].....it is the volunteer
cruiser recovery teams objective to refloat all 15 remaining yachts [
sorry but we think one yacht is damaged beyond economical repairs]
Tomorrow
preparation work will commence on SV Distant Beat, this yacht tried
to sail herself into the Police Station Compound. With MV Contraband
unavailable we will in a few days hope to kedge her around a number
of obstacles by good old manual effort.
Work
has been progressing with other yachts removing as much weight as
possible, a giant sled is being designed and building must start next
week for all the yachts that were forced inland by TC Winston's storm
surge then we can take advantage of the 2 meter tides.
That's
it for today folks . It's great to report that the positive attitude
of the cruisers and their efforts to help each other is being
recognized by the authority's and by the Savusavu townspeople,
further more it being used as an example of the benefits of people
working together....Way to go Sailors !!!!!!!!
Brief
Curly Recovery Report # 7 Dated Tues 01 Mar 2016
Sorry
about no post yesterday, computer glitzes / Curly's big fingers ??
compounded by falling over [sober] and breaking my glass's.
Sunday
was a lay day to allow cruisers time to rest or do repairs on their
own yachts. Yesterday, Monday morning, was on preparation work, and
gaining approvals from authorities. I called the second recovery
meeting of all the cruisers which was well attended. The meeting was
briefed on progress and the need to not only help each other but to
keep everyone positive regarding health and welfare above all to keep
focused on the difficult days ahead while we as a team attempt to
refloat the remaining 15 yachts. I am confident we will refloat all
yachts with the exception of maybe 1 and with the continuing
support of all the cruising fleet we will do it via our own resources
and minimize costs ………….
Williams
and Gosling [Suva] – logistics' and supply chain professionals for
over 75 years- and one of Fiji's largest customs clearing brokers
were asked re the possible supply of ships containers to store yachts
equipment while we lighten the yachts for recovery, they immediately
responded and will provide some 40 foot containers rent free for 3
months. AWESOME PLUS ASSIST YACHTS IN GETTING PARTS INTO FIJI QUICKLY
AND ECONOMICALLY LETS SUPPORT THOSE HELPING US CRUISERS…….
Today
Cruiser Teams will today;-
1]
Bring upright SV Heritage with the generous help of Nawi Island
Development. Heritage will stay put till the 2 meter high tides later
this month, when we will refloat her.
2]
Be preparing SV Distant Beat, for a manual cruiser attempt tomorrow.
The yacht is to be lightened, the broken mizzen removed, strengthen
rig, a team of locals will dig the coral/mud from around the keel and
rudder.
3]A
local team is cutting access to the catamaran Amosea Island, who is
aground on rocks and badly damaged.
4]
Still further cruiser teams are lightening the yachts aground.
As
always there are selfish individuals who just look after themselves
are negative and vocal on social media but here they are so few they
stand out. Shame on you, realize you are standing out like a spare
groom at a wedding !!!!!!
That's
it for today, if you are a sailor and reading this, be very very
proud of the cruising sailors who are here helping.
Regards
and thanks for all the emails of encouragement
Curly
Brief
Curly Recovery Report #8Dated Wed 02 Mar 2016
Yesterday
was a busy day for everyone in the cruising fleet.
Cruiser
teams and cruiser supervised local teams were preparing yachts for
refloating, other teams were removing weighty items etc …. Many
temporary fix's have been done so a cruiser follow up team are
following up with more permanent fix's/repairs.
Traditional
and government approvals were yesterday being actioned by Meli of
Savusavu Marina for all cruisers who are aground whether coming under
the umbrella of our cruiser recovery group or not.
Updates;
SV
Distant Beat; tree branches removed from around rigging, digging of
rudder and keel, removal of badly damaged izzen mast
Marine
Surveyor from Dover Marine ( Lautoka) were surveying yachts.
Bruce
of Westside Rigging was here checking out yachts. Thanks so much
Bruce your prompt visit was really appreciated. I am sure we see you
again after we refloat the 15 yachts still aground.
SV
Heritage has moved in the mangroves so a cruiser team along with Nawi
Island
Staff were working to stabilize her. Thanks Nawi Island for your
support.
SV
Alcamist; A team of locals supervised by a cruiser were digging out
the spade rudder and keel in preparation of hauling off when MV
Contraband and the high tides allow.
Wood
for the sled to haul yachts off across coral and deep mud has been
ordered and I have paid a non refundable deposit. Note, the timber
yards are becoming empty, all timber is being used to rebuild a
shattered community,
We
do have a glitz with getting our 2x 40 foot containers from Suva to
Savusavu, the cost is prohibitive, we are working on the problem.
TODAY>>>>>the
Teams are busy again ,
SV
Amosea has moved on the rocks which was an extreme surprise , a
cruiser team is securing her and unloading – a 24 hour watchmen is
being hired .
There
is a meeting at 10h00 (Savusavu Marina ) of all those still aground
who anticipate using the sled - we must reach agreement re funding
this.
RE
Distant Beat, a co-ordination meeting will be held at Savusavu Marina
at 10h30, 4 teams will meet and discuss a possible attempt at kedging
her off at high tide today.
Must
go folks ………..thanks for all the emails of encouragement.
Regards,
Curly.
Brief
Curly Recovery Report # 9 Dated Thurs 03 Mar 2016
Yesterday
was another extremely busy day throughout the cruising fleet as work
continued with most grounded yachts, to reduce weight and secure
contents of yachts, it is with extreme disappointment
that
I had to convey to the fleet that we have a problem in getting the 2
x 40 foot containers to Savusavu from Suva. The cost is prohibitive
but we are working on the problems – W&G have the containers
and the truck available immediatly, it's just the ferry/shipping
costs ……
An
Attempt was made to refloat SV Distant Beat, as the owner is wanting
to get back to Australia and his job, this was partially successful
in that the cruiser teams were able to haul her from one beam over
vertical to the other beam which will make further recovery work much
easier. It should be noted during the height of TC Winston –
Distant Beat drove herself into a small shallow and muddy inlet
in the mangroves. It is unfortunate that the tides are not currently
helpful so Distant Beat must wait to the 2 meter tides next week
where it is expected the cruising fleet volunteer teams will try
again.
Other
teams tried to stabilize Amosea Island that had moved on the rocks
and a further team of cruisers with grateful assistance from Nawi
Island staff worked on stabilizing SV Heritage, cutting branchs from
trees and general preparation for refloating on the higher tides next
week.
The
meeting I called for those aground way inland on the mud and coral
flats re funding the yacht sled was not well attended, so this
initative is on hold, [Note I have made a nonrefundable deposit on
the timber to hold the timber for the recovery of yachts - as timber
available is in very short supply] I have a feeling yacht owners are
waiting to see if the diggers/excavators sink or can they cut trenchs
all the way to deep water, in addition they are waiting to see the
cost of using diggers for channels etc
We
have heard that all the Local and Government Authorities have given
approval to start excavator digging channels out to open water but I
have asked and are continue asking for the full permission IN
WRITING………NO ONE CAN PRODUCE THE PERMISSION …..Please fleet,
please cruisers DO NOT USE AN EXCAVATOR MACHINE till we have the full
permission IN WRITING………
The
next few days apart from emergencies should be used as chill-out time
, rest, looking after all your cuts/injures and your own vessels. If
you are 100% your yacht is safe needs little work and you would like
to help NOW then call me on 868 0878 or email me
curlycarswell@gmail.com
there are projects for cruiser volunteers.
To
date the example set by most (NOT ALL) cruisers have been fantastic
and something to be proud of. Next week we have 1-3 yachts that
hopefully will be hauled off easily IF THEY HAVE BEEN PREPARED BUT in
regards to the remainder It needs to be understood the recovery and
refloating of yachts will be more difficult as the next yachts are
either high and dry or way inland over mud flats,
Regards
and again thanks for all the encouragement.

Brief
Curly Recovery Refloating Report #10 Dated Fri 04 Mar 2016
Alister
- MV Contraband, have been calling him daily, very interesting he
fled the hospital as they wanted to admit him, and he has not been
recaptured, so will be here tomorrow. He is feeling a lot better and
walking better. He wants to haul off the first yacht on Sunday the 6
March.. Please let me know what yachts are ready for hauling off or
towing……
Yesterday
was meant to be a day of R&R, but 2 Cruiser Recovery/Refloating
Teams were hard at work, and I had a series of meetings, concerning
the overall program.
The
most important meeting was called by FRCA-Customs, all marina's were
represented except Copra Shed, I will talk to Dolly today.
I
spoke of a yacht sled concept at our fleet meeting on 23 Feb 2016,
and asked for assistance in designing a sled. There were no
volunteers. I again called a meeting which was held at the Savusavu
Marina a few days ago to obtain firm commitments from those aground
re funding as I have been paying out of my own pocket for direct
expences connected to the recovery and refloating of yachts from day
one and folks I am not rich and I can not afford to go much further,
the disinterest in the sled idea was alarming, I have ordered the
timber and due to most timber yards selling out their entire stock I
have deposited this timber to safe guard against it being sold.
Think
– think folks I know you are probably waiting to see how costly it
is to use excavators, or even if the excavators can dig the long
channels to deep water, there are 6 yachts aground on the mud flats
or mangroves have any of you considered the environmental damage we
will cause !!!!!!! Let there be no complaints if you are still
aground and waiting for the April 2 meter tides.
I
am attaching the latest email from Mr Ali of Customs, please read and
action as soon as possible. Now I posted a similar request back on 27
Feb report #5…..now we have been overload on helping grounded
yachts BUT IT IS IMPORTANT ALL YACHTS ACTION THIS REQUEST.
It
is important to fill in as much as possible!!!!!! Customs are aware
many cruisers can not ascertain all the damage yet, we have till the
20 March 2016 to submit, you can go to customs and they will help you
.
It
is vital to keep Customs current with your repairs etc
For
those yachts that owners are absent the marina's or mooring operators
must contact the owners/or their local agents and action where
possible.

Brief
Curly Recovery Refloating Report # 11 Dated Sat 05 Mar 16
Yesterday
there was some activity but not to extent of previous days, I think
the energy level after being so hyped is disappearing, the fleet
needs a couple days R&R plus we now have armchair salvage experts
lurking around mudding the water, the exception was around SV Fraias
Drakaal [a Catamaran] who are scheduled to be towed off on Monday. It
appears that Alcamist will not be ready as originally thought for
Sunday….so they will slide back too wed….
A
meeting was called by some cruisers from Savusavu Marina as they are
considering not a wooden yacht sled but a steel sled….I feel .that
maybe there are some issues to be resolved, and the whole concept/
walked through!!!!!!
SV
Amosea's owner has arrived, the salvage of this yacht is going to be
a real challenge as she is stern up, bow down under water, the angle
is 25 degrees, she is resting on large rocks and stones, she has
multiple holes below the water line….Equipment is being flown in,
while the catamaran is being emptied of boat stuff to lighten her.
Amosea will be repaired on site then launched where she went
aground….
Regards,
Curly
Brief
Curly Recovery Report # 12 .Dated Sun 06 Mar16
Yesterday
was a well deserved R&R day for most cruiser teams, however Chris
of SV Distant Beat employed a local gang of workers to dig around his
yacht, Geoff from the cat Fraias Drakkar had a local gang of workers
digging and a fiberglass man, SV Amosea had a gang of locals, removed
most wet contents and heavy gear, we found a container and had it
delivered, the original wood for a sled was delivered to Amosea and
will now be use for Amosea's salvage. The wood had to be carried by
hand to the yacht, tarpaulins were purchased.
The
best news is I was able to ;-
1]
Locate 4 huge tyre tubes used for large earth moving equipment I was
able to get space so airfreighted them to Labasa. I arranged a taxi
from Savusavu to uplift them from Labasa, anyone who wants them must
contact me.They will be first used on SV Fraias Drakkar today....then
to raise the bowers of Amosea.
2]
On my request W&G are locating 4 large rope cargo nets, these
will be on the ferry on Monday night…..these will be used to
confine tightly like sausage outers the floatation equipment i.e.
plastic drums, water tanks that are almost impossible to keep in
place, without these nets.
3]
I have arranged a 4x4 wheeled excavator / digger to form an access to
SV Amosea, the machine will be available to others but only for work
out of salt water..
-Anyone
who wants any items mentioned must contact me. Useage will be
resrtricted to those most in need.
-We
are trying to source a engine driven high volumn water pump to pump
yachts and to use as a mud blaster????
-We
are desparate to source 40 mm hose 5 meters of reinforced, 5 meters
of plastic out let hose….
That's
it for today, with a little luck we will try to haul off SV Frias
Drakkar at high tide this afternoon.
Regards,
Curly…………
Positive
thoughts and positive attitudes can and will salvage yachts if the
fleet continues to work closely together…..
Brief
Curly Recovery Report # 12A Dated Mon 07 Mar 16
Yesterday
we attempted to recover/refloat SV Fraias Drakkar, while we
did move her a little we were unable to float her. There was
incredible attendance of the fleet to assist, well done cruisers.
Today
I have arranged a 14 ton tracked excavator, that should arrive by 10
am todat the low bed truck has already departed Labasa. This
excavator will work on digging around SV Fraias Drakker in
preparation for a another attempt at high tide.
A
high volume water pump with its own engine is being purchased for
pumping out holed yachts and also to be used as a mud pump. Parts for
pumps and genset should be on the Ferry tonight from Suva.
I
have one of Fiji's top marine mechanic's coming up from Lautoka, he
is certified for manufacturers warranty work so is top line. I will
call a fleet meeting and cruisers will have the opportunity to
question him….
Sorry
to much happening must run, cheers till tomorrow.
Regards,
Curly
Brief
Curly Recovery Report # 14 .Dated Tues 08 Mar 16
Well
yesterday the digger arrived a little late from Labasa but everyone
was impressed with the amount of soil the excavator could move, in 2
hours. These digger operators can make the machines dance, so careful
and so close to the yacht.
There
was great attendance of the cruising fleet to assist at low tide.
Preparation supervision was by skipper Geoff and admiral Alister from
MV Contraband along with our "A Team".
I
am so pleased to advise this attempt to refloat SV Fraias Drakker
went very smoothly indeed.
Jonny
the Irishman of SV Cirripedia who had quietly worked at unsticking
his yacht that was standing upright in the mud, and a band of
cruisers with a small excavator assisting was successful in
refloating SV Cirripedia, a tremendous effort on behalf of Jonny and
his cruiser helpers.
So
2 yachts recovered and refloated in one day….awesome effort of all
cruisers who helped!!!!
We
now have the following yachts standing by for recovery the crews
working on them need to conclude preparation.
1] SV
Alcamist
2] SV
Symbosis
3] SV
Hertitage.
The
future Recovery of the other yachts, will depend on the owners
preferences, we'll advise in due course. But we are confident that
most yachts will be recovered and refloated.
Brief
Curly Recovery Report # 15 Dated Wed 09 Mar 16
It
is with great sadness that I heard that Grumpy Gary and Milli's SV
Heartbeat has been technically abandoned so it has been taken over by
the customs as a wreck under the Customs Wreck and Salvage
Legislation, it now has a customs tarpoline over it, and no one is
permitted to touch Heartbeat without approval from customs…..
As
our Cruisers Recovery and Refloating team work with locals it is
understandable that the typical generosity of cruisers mean gifts are
given from the yachts to locals who have done a great job…..Please
understand we have an incredibly good relationship between cruisers
and custom and we do not want to loose that good will, SAILORS the
gifting of stores from a cruising yacht must first have duty paid.
Customs will access the gift at a reasonable rate have no fear---
just pop down and see Mr Nausad Ali the customs chief.
Now
due the latest legislation, all cruising yachts who wish to import
spares must first obtain a Tax Identification Number ( TIN # ) this
can be done at Customs House or at the Post Office, I'm pretty sure
there are no fee's.
Still
on the subject of customs, it is pleasing to see that 2 customs
officers have sent to us for helping with the cruiser recovery and
refloating of yachts.
Yesterday
was another good day. SV Alchemist was hauled off and refloated by
one of our volunteer cruiser teams, assisted by the excavator, the
skipper of Mambo – Heinz and our Admiral Alister on MV Contraband.
Well done everyone.
MV
Contraband and the Nawi Islands Landing Craft
refloated the Mini Cruiseship " Fiji Serene"! The ship was
up on Nawi island. Special well done to all involved.
Sorry
must cut short this today, too much happening ….
Regards,
Curly.

Curly Recovery Report # 16 Dated Fri 11 Mar 16
I
am so sorry I did not post a report, nor weather yesterday morning.
But I guess my age of 21 years [ ho hum in my 70's]…and post
TCWinston 19 days of working 15/18 hour days, along with a bad left
leg, swollen left ankle and foot , infected wounds on both legs
finally caught up with me AND I CRASHED YESTERDAY....! I am pleased
to advise my recovery systems are still great very effective,,,,, I
an OK...
Now
I hope the above keeps all my many adopted Mothers , Fathers and
Cousins bro's up to date-… I really do thank you all for your
concerns but what has to be done has to be done….OH I know
But…..:-))) hehehehehe
It
seems I worried a number of owner skippers who have yet to be
refloated with my list of 3 yacht for salvage in my report # 14 dated
08 mar 2016. These yachts are expected to be the next 3 yachts to be
readied for Salvage. I have a list of 11 Yachts to be salvaged by out
Cruisers Recovery/Refloating Program, so sorry crews….It must be
realized we can not expect to refloat you all in this months 2 meter
High Tide Cycle. The next month cycle start on 06 April there is even
some higher tides than this month!!!!!!—Patience is a virtue, I'm
told????
Now
here are vessel updates;-
1] Unfortunately
MV Contraband has a problem with their windlass, until we get a
mooring for the admiral or repair the windlass we will need to
postpone the next few haulouts… we do not appear to have any yachts
currently ready for a tow anyway.
2] Due
to the above and as SV Distant Beat is in confined water I hope we
can attempt to kedge her off at high tide Sat Morning say 0800 hours.
Please
call me if you are available to assist the Team of Jack, Barry and
Jim.
3] I
understand Mark of SV Karma has been busy, and propped his yacht to
enable repairs to be made to Karma's hull.
4] There
was much action around SV Quikzotic yesterday, by Ed and his friends,
so as to remove the yacht off the rocks….
5] SV
Pacifica, John seems to have Pacifica repairs well under control, she
has become both a local and Tourist Attraction being almost
against the sea wall infront of MH Supermarket on the main Street.
6] Regarding
SV Amosea Island;, The team here have been extremely busy- almost
every thing dismountable has been removed from the yacht and into the
ships container on site, oh a road access was specially made to
salvage site, a 2000 litre water tank is on site for interior
washing.
Yesterday
the Starboard Hull's multiple Holes were temp repaired almost
water-tight, 3 of the 4 giant earth moving machine tyre tubes were
put under the bridge deck port-side and inflated- the overall result
was the bows are over 2 feet out of the water now instead of the bows
being 2 feet under water- some water was pumped but as the vessel is
stern up and bows down into the water at an angle of 45 degrees
sitting on a sharp rock face. We are having to play a balancing act
to avoid additional damage hence we have left most of the water
inside the hulls and used a man with a very large steel chisel and
maul to break what rocks we can then packing in sand bags……I
consider this yacht to be one of the most difficult yachts apart from
SV Hearbeat to salvage. The stone damage is servere, more so to the
Port Hull. More information tomorrow, owner has agreed to jack up on
bridge deck to clear water, all repairs will be undertaken on site.
7] I
understand that Phil from SV Last Unicorn has been very busy in
preparing his yacht for hauling off. Well done Phil, and those
helping.
8] SV
Heritage has been stabilized vertical , and it was great to see Kasey
and to hear from Andrew.
Checks
are being undertaken however SV Heritage will be one of the yachts to
utilize the higher tides in April 16.
Must
fly, eat breakfast, take more pills so that I rattle when I shuffle
along (((……must continue to keep all my adopted mothers-dads and
cousins bro's happy

Brief
Curly Recovery Report #18 Dated Sun 13 Mar 2016;
Yesterday
was a busy and long day for the teams, on SV Amosea, the last huge
hole was being closed-fingers crossed; SV Distant Beat which will
have an attempt to recover and refloat today, SV Karma and Marks
repairs, SV Symbiosis removing rocks and other prep for a salvage
attempt, SV Last Unicorn Phil's busy reducing weight. It must be
realized there is also a large number of cruiser volunteers assisting
in repairs of their and other peoples yachts. We as a fleet have
realized that time and effort spent on preparation for recovery and
refloatings is critical if a successful outcome is to be expected…
The
cruising fleet status and recovery meeting held yesterday was well
attended, and most productive, it was pleasing to get the very firm
and genuine feeling that THE ORIGINAL AIM/ OBJECTIVE of the Cruisers
Recovery and Refloating Program of the RECOVERY ALL THE YACHTS (
EXCEPT THOSE ABANDONED BY OWNERS) is very much alive and
achievable……the fleet's volunteers are close to refloating 50 %
of those yachts driven ashore in the cat5 Cyclone Winston. Sustained
winds of 135Plus gusts to 180+.
It
s truly amazing to understand that by working as a co-ordinated
team/s the cruiser program has been able to recover and refloat all
yachts to date for less than $250 USD average per yacht IF THIS
EXTREME CRUISER EFFORT and IT"S SUCCESS IS NOT MAKING HISTORY
…..I WILL BE VERY SURPRISED ….
HELP
WE NEED URGENTLY 4X CARGO LIFTNG ROPE NETS, FROM OLD FREIGHTERS,
PERHAPES HELICOPTER LIFT NET …. CAN ANYONE READING THIS
ASSIST-EXTREMLY URGENT
I
will be posting the minutes of yesterdays meeting in one /two days,
sorry I am needed at 2 yachts about to have attempts to refloat….more
tomorrow
Thanks
for every ones emails of support!!!
Regards,
Curly.
Brief
Curly Recovery Report # 19 Dated Mon 14 Mar 2016;
AWESOME
ANOTHER SUCCESS – CRUISER TEAM REFLOATS SV DISTANT-BEAT...WELL DONE
!!!!!
Well
folks all of the hard work and preparation put in by one of our
cruiser teams for this attempt has paid off with the refloating of SV
Distant Beat at high tide yesterday. A big thank you to all the other
cruisers who turned out to assist, this at end of the day was yet
another Cruising Fleet effort …
SV
Amosea Island on the same tide gave it's cruiser team a few stressful
moments as " Murphy Struck"….the juggling game of keeping
just enough water in the forward hulls so as to keep the bows down to
lift the stern so that repairs to a huge hole over a square meter can
be done, was upset by the high volume water pump stopping….the day
was saved by the rapid response for help by cruisers delivering other
pumps and our quick repair of the high volume pump. We seem to have
stopped the water entering both the engines, genset …..at low tide
efforts to patch holes continued. Large sharp rocks are not the
environment for yachts to be sitting on. One rock that protruded
inside the hull had to be chiseled away, slow and very difficult
work. A pumping watch was organized last night…
SV
Pacifica, John has worked away with his crew, and is making great
progress. He plans to get an excavator in when repairs finished and
excavate a short channel to deep water, he was offered assistance
from the fleet.
SV
Symbiosis; Andre reported they have moved 2 rocks of 3 that had
stopped a haul off attempt, one rock remains. This yacht has no mast
[lost during cyclone], and the vessel has a wing keel and the seal
between the keel and hull has a widening gap foreward….DARN….he
needs 12 inches of lift, unfortunately most of the lift items are in
use, we plan to revisit his site today.
The
steel sled initiative by cruisers from Savusavu Marina is
progressing. Four yachts: Last Unicorn, Shangri La, Rainbow Shadow,
and Karma, who were all driven by Cyclone Winstons sea surge inland
100-200 meters ending up above mean high tide levels are funding the
sled. These vessels have to be sledded across thick , in some cases
deep mud and hard coral heads. Systems and brain trust storming is
well underway #@%^^$#@??, WOW there is a glow of positive
thoughts over the Yaroi mudflats.
It
is unlikely the above four yachts and the cat Viva la vie will be
moved until the April 2/ 2.1 meter tides restart approx 6 April
2016…..the time from now to 06 April must be spent in lightening
the vessels, taking off every dismountable item so as to give the
sled every advantage.
Thanks
a quad zillion for all the emails of encouragement I receive daily
they are fantastic and very much treasured…..I am very sorry but
even with working 12 plus hours a day I just don't have the time to
answer all emails …again sorry.
OK
OK OK OK OK …gee how can a young man like me have so many Mothers
and Fathers and Cousins Bros?????????? I admit I am very tired, I
rattle when I shuffle around with pills and heavy advise which I
really try to follow, but have to admit it's becoming harder and
harder to get around, my left ankle and foot is now very swollen
–swelling is going up leg slowly the right ankle and foot has
started to swell, I am trying to minimize being on my feet and am
elevating the feet as much as possible…..
That's
it for today hope I have more good news for the blog tomorrow…
IF
YOU ARE A SAILOR OUT THERE ANYWHERE ........YOU CAN BE VERY PROUD OF
YOUR FRIENDS, FELLOW SAILORS/CRUISERS AND THEIR AMAZING EFFORTS TO
HELP EACH OTHER HERE IN SAVUSAVU. FROM 19 YACHTS DRIVEN ASHORE THE
CRUISERS HAVE ONLY 9 YACHTS REMAINING TO BE REFLOATED AND WE THE
CRUISING FLEET WILL SEE EVERY LAST YACHT REFLOATED !!!!!!!!!!!! The
average cost of refloating all the yachts to date has been less than
$250 USD
Regards
with best wish's,
Curly.
Brief
Curly Recovery Report # 20 Dated Tues 15 Mar 2016;
For
most crews of yachts still aground [9] due to declining tides it is a
period to take in huge gulps of air and try and relax, before
continuing to remove all dismountable weight of their yachts, and
generally do repairs and above all undertake any preparation re
hauloff.
Yachts
that are comfortable and safe ( ie currently not at danger of further
damage) should not be getting diggers to alter the status quo….this
should be left to immediately before the CO-ORDINATED haul off
attempt.
The
next high tides are starting again 06 April 2016….the co-ordinated
cruiser teams have ID'd very few –if any yachts that attempts
should be made on till 06 April. It is disappointing to hear that an
individual/s is winding up owners of yachts still aground.
A
few hard lessons have been learnt that, and it appears we are heading
towards some further disappointment as owners listen and action
advise from illinformed but well intentioned individuals….The
cruising fleet has a pool of great expertize available, this has been
honed after all the successful LOW COST salvages in the most recent
weeks, owners need to think carefully.......
SV
Quikzotic at Savusavu Marina, attempts to use the steel sled to haul
her up past high Water….
SV
Amosea Island …Work on the badly damaged port hull continued
yesterday. Note during TC Winston the port saildrive was driven into
the engine room approx 12 inches after impacting the rocks –
yesterday we glassed around the enlarged hole where the leg used to
be and then in addition used P38 to try and stop water pouring into
the engine room…2 large capacity pumps were JUST ABLE TO HOLD THE
FLOW OF WATER BELOW THE ENGINE…...we are pleased that the extensive
repairs and giant patches to starboard hull are holding.
Sorry
must fly …….too many balls in the air….
Regards,
Curly
Brief
Curly Recovery Report # 21 Dated Wed 16 Mar 2016
Updates;-
SV
Quikzotic I understand will be pulled to above high tide today at
Savusavu Marina,
SV
Amosea Island. We still have one major leak around the sail drive but
we have been impacted by shortages!!!! there is no epoxy hardener on
the island and the shipment expected from the mainland didn't arrive
yesterday, we are marking time UGGGGGggggggg so the team is using 2
high capacity Pumps and a third pump going over the high tide
periods, we are using sand bags under the port hull in an effort to
raise the stern and the huge earth moving machine tyre tubes inflated
under the bridge deck as buoyancy or lift bags…. We one of Fiji's
ace mechanic's arriving today from Nadi/Lautoka for his initial check
around as he will be contracted to check and then repair all
mechanical equipment. The electric's are being checked and repaired,
interior is being carefully cleaned ……we are very thankful for
the great support from the fleet.
SV
Heritage owner has booked MV Contraband and the cruisers team for the
high tide on 09 April 16 to be hauled off Nawi Island. Floatation
equipment will be available plus it's a 2.1 meter tide.
SV
Symbiosis is booked with MV Contraband and cruisers team for 06 April
2016, as floatation equipment will be available, plus 2 meter tide
SV
Pacifica;- John will be refloating tomorrow and has requested dinghy
assistance which the cruising fleet will provide.
This
could become somewhat of a frustrating time from now till when the
higher tides come round in April for those owners with yachts still
aground, I will be offering to all owners whose yachts are aground
some very experienced cruisers who have proven experience in
recovering and refloating yachts, to act as Mentors /Advisors to
those aground in an effort to help up till recovery and refloating
operations recommence. We have 4 yachts anxiously waiting to see how
effective the steel sled will be.
IMPORTANT;
RE SV Amosea. This is the last yacht still at considerable risk, for
that reason I am spending considerable time at the Amosea site, BUT I
HAVE NOT FORGOTTEN THE FLEET. It is mischievious for some to be
hinting my lack of visibility means I am forgetting those still
aground.
My
cell (new fone) is 868 0878, email is <curlycarswell@gmail.com>
I am always available to listen and help if I can…
Sorry
must fly ……those balls in the air are falling.
Regards,
Curly
Brief
Curly Recovery Report # 22 Dated Thurs 17 Mar 2016
Updates;
SV
Quikzotic will today be moved out of the water by Sled at Savusavu
Marina.
SV
Pacifica will be refloated at high tide today, and assisted by the
cruising fleet to a mooring.
SV
Amosea Island; Hive of activity yesterday as both engines, one
saildrive and the generator set were prepared for craning out this
morning. They will be sent to Lautoka for major maintenance /rebuild
as required. Work continued yesterday on sealing the holes on the
port hull, we removed the portside Saildrive and have temp put a
patch over the hole] so if we were successful yesterday we will
refloat at high tide today [1415 hours ], move the yacht out 20
meters into deep water and anchor. The next phase is to construct the
bridge deck frame over the water where we will lift with heavy jacks
the yacht out of the water for the major repairs required. All the
above will be done at the site of the grounding.
Most
Yachts still aground are preparing for the April high tides, one
yacht not wanting to see if the sled will work or for whatever
reason, may dig a channel all the way out to deep water approx 100+
meters , a pity as this is environmentally a disaster that could
possibly have been avoided. Note selective minimal excavation will be
required for most yachts still aground, but minimal excavation.
In
general I'm told there is a sense of optimism through the fleet which
is awesome.
I
have had a positive response to a request I made to the New Zealand
Weather Guru Bob Mc Davitt, so he is specifically looking out further
than normal in regards to possible Tropical Cyclone activity in our
Savusavu area, this is in view that we have yachts still aground and
it takes time to reinstate mooring.
Have
to get reluctantly moving I am quiet frankly exhausted, BUT apart
from swelling particularly on one leg/ankle , I am slowly on the
mend….
Regards,
Curly
Brief
Curly Recovery Report #23 Dated Fri 18 Mar 2016
Updates;-
SV
Quikzotic has been moved above high tide at Savusavu Marina.
SV
Pacifica; Attempts to haul her off were unsuccessful yesterday. More
excavation required??
SV
Amosea Island;- Yesterday the genset, both engines, both
saildrives were successfully removed and are being shipped to
repair/rebuilding shop in Lautoka. Due to delays in removing the
genset we lost the midday high tide to refloat, so last night around
midnight SV Amosea Island was refloated and taken out to deeper water
on an anchor. The professional cleaner team will start this morning
on the yachts interior. The excavator will this morning start work on
the bed foundations to lift the yacht out of the water…
There
is great, across the board, help and assistance being given through
out the cruising fleet, WELL DONE CRUISERS.
Waitui's
Jolene the Co-Ordinator of "Saturdays Cruisers Thank you Party"
is very busy. This BBQ party is sponsored by Waitui Marina, Savusavu
Marina and Curly , held at Savusavu Marina ….some free beer and
BBQ. All Cruisers need to bring is plates and KFS…..all Cruisers
welcome as we Waitui Marina , Savusavu Marina and Curly want to
thanks you all for your help and assistance post TC Winston and
celebrate the successful refloating of so many grounded cruisers.
Sorry
those darned balls are harder and harder to keeping the air…

Curly Recovery Report # 24 Dated Sat 19 Mar 2016.
Updates;-
I
have no updates on yachts being hauled off, however, there is still
activity re preparation for haul off….
SV
Karma, Mark and his team are working at the fibre glass repairs, it's
great to hear Mark in great spirits.
SV
Amosea ;- Unfortunately the excavator operator was AWOL yesterday so
work on the foundation for the bridge-deck frame was delayed, but
this morning I heard the excavator start up, so today we commence
work. The Cleaning teams have made slow ( mud extraction delays ) but
great progress…We still have some small leaks, annoying but not
critical although I have crew on pump watch 24 hours. I have laid
another bow anchor for safety. We have started system checks. I have
contacted Fountaine Pajot for drawings and spec's, also to be
allocated an English speaking liason person and they have responded
positively –fantastic.

Curly Recovery Report # 25 Dated Sun 20 Mar 2016.
Updates;-
Again
yesterday those still aground were busy preparing their yachts for
Haulout on the next high tide cycle in 7/8 April 2016….
SV
Amosea Island initial work on the foundations for the bridge-deck
lift frame was excavated, work will continue on Monday. The interior
/ exterior cleaning teams are in typical Fijian fashion of high
spirits getting the yacht sparkling again never mind having to remove
mud etc the transformation is amazing ….A few small leaks frustrate
our fiberglass man but Amosea Island is very happy to be floating
again. Trying to get drinking and washing water is a real problem we
are running the rental hard bringing jerry jugs, there does not seem
to be a private water truck …. UG
All
work throughout the cruising fleet stopped at mid afternoon, so
everyone could prepare for the "Thank You Cruisers Party".
This
party was sponsored by Waitui Marina, Savusavu Marina and Curly, free
beer, free soft drinks and free BBQ was laid on for the fleet as a
small sign of appreciation by the sponsors to all the work the
cruisers had done to minimize the impact of TC Winston on Savusavu
the yachting destination, also to celebrate the refloating of 13
vessels, leaving only 8 yachts to be refloated. I am confident all
the yachts will be refloated in time. Only one yacht will have been
abandoned by it's owners. It has been disappointing that the
coprashed marina has chosen to not be involved in the "the very
successful cruiser recovery / refloating program, nor the cruiser
thank you party!!!!!!
The
Savusavu Marina was decorated in such a cheerful manner it helped
raise everyones spirits, the cruisers jam session was highly
appreciated, the food was great and the beer and soft drinks lasted,
what a fantastic gathering of cruisers ………
Sorry
those balls again , huh but less stress now…..

No
yachts were hauled off yesterday, but preparation for high tides next
month continues….for some it is frustrating, the hurry up and wait.
Repair
work continues on the yachts damaged, of course, a number of glassing
jobs will be delayed.
SV
Karma was doing fibreglass work.
SV
Amosea Island; trying to figure the Israeli language / signs in the
engine room is a challenge, 3 crew working at cleaning and tidying up
etc.
Today
we continue with foundations for bridge deck frame.
SV
Distant Beat will today be taken back to it's mooring.

Curly Recovery Report # 27 Dated Tues 22 Mar 2016
Just
like in the army, hurry up and wait is frustrating but with the heavy
rain today maybe the Fella Upstairs (above us) is saying take a rest
@$#@!? sailors, you all sure deserve it….
Didn't
hear of any activity yesterday except at SV Amosea Island the
cleaners continue to find pockets of mud, BUT the Yacht interior is
starting to look very good again…We drove the first 2 x 11 feet
piles in yesterday for the under-bridge-deck frame, but was delayed
by non delivery of the 6 other piles, at low tide today I hope we can
complete this task, and continue bridge-deck frame foundations……
Serious
dizziness is that caused by low blood ressure HMMMmmmm
Amos
is making sure I eat at least one meal a day, so he kidnappes me at
lunch ….. We are testing every restaurant in town, interesting
comparisons of food, cleanness and ambience….
Sorry
no other news

Yesterday
it rained heavily in the morning so most of the cruisers had a day of
well deserved rest…..
Updates;
SV
Pacifica may try to haul off today, they have had men digging under
the hulls, back breaking work….the staff at MH Premium Supermarket
will miss the yacht apparently being in their carpark?
SV
Rainbow Shadow is having a frustrating time finding a reliable
excavator operator to effect their plans for refloating. I know the
feeling of frustration.
SV
Karma, repair work/glassing is progressing well and Mark is in great
spirits.
Gee
wizzzz, I have so many adopted Mums and Dads, who jam my emails with
health and welfare requests so here is latest, Day before yesterday I
was suffering from real dizzy spells, that actually incapacitated
me... they worried me so much I went to Dr.
Dr
visits are few and far between …. I stayed on the houseboat
yesterday due to rain [good excuse eh] and the difference in my legs
swelling was amazing, not to mention no dizziness, wow maybe the Dr's
onto somethingJ)) I am ok walking short distances but anything over
50 meters my left knew and left hip and lower back become extremely
painful……Vijendra ( from Surf and Turf restaurant] son in law
Edwin and his wife Samantha have presented me with a proper new
aluminium walking stick, Thanks a quad zillion BUT silly old blighter
that I am ….. I am too embarrassed to use it, as I will have to
admit I have finally arrived at geriatric-ville, darn it
%#@$%^&^%#.....!!!!!!!!!....guess the walking stick gives me
a added legal weapon to be used on rascals who tempt fate
HEHEheheheheeeee.
That's
enough for today

Yipppeeeeeeeee
another yacht refloated, SV Pacifica was refloated last night at high
tide, Pacifica's crew worked at digging her out by excavator and by
hand !!! Admiral Alister of MV Contraband and a crew of volunteer
cruisers again used MV Contraband's 44 inch prop and grunt to haul
her off….Well done everyone…..fantastic in fact….one by one the
owners and cruising fleet volunteers are refloating each other
!!!!!!!!!
We
have only 8 Yachts to be refloated, and I am confident we will have
all yachts back floating in time. Next high tide cycle next month 7/8
April.
SV
Karma reports great progress on glassing repairs being done by
cruiser volunteers, well done crew.
SV
Rainbow Shadow, still searching for reliable excavator to assist in
refloating.
SV
Last Unicorn I understand is waiting for an excavator.
SV
Amosea Island…yesterday all the bridge-deck frame pilings were
driven/bashed in! by the excavator …huge rocks were formed then a
foundation box was constructed and with the excavator bucket acting
as a concrete mixer we poured the stage one of the concrete
foundation-kind of amazing $#@ but very effective….very
different….it sent the owner into a filming frenzy…J))
Construction of the foundation will continue today along with rock
lining the slips sides.
I
had a great day…..even delivered my spare dink to SV Snow Bird who
is marooned on his yacht.
Regards
to all, and thanks so much for your emails.
